Frequently Asked Questions
Bio and Environmental Q&A
What are Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EAL)?
Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) are defined as biodegradable, non-bioaccumulative and minimally harmful for aquatic environment (like fish, seaweeds …). EAL products must be used on equipment with oil-to-sea interfaces unless technically infeasible and are mandatory in United States waters since 2013.
What are the benefits of EAL?
Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) have a lower environmental footprint and are an alternative to mineral-based lubricants. Ships using EALs are able to comply with various legislative requirements including the US Environmental Protection Agency’s and obtain a 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP).
What is the purpose of VGP?
The VGP is a National Pollutant Release System (NPDES)Â Permit that authorizes, on a national basis, incidental discharges to the normal operation of non-military and non-recreational vessels of 79 feet in length and over.
What vessel are subject to VGP?
The VGP applies to discharges incidental to the normal operation of all non-recreational vessels of 79 feet or greater in length. In addition, the ballast water discharge provisions also apply to any non-recreational vessel of less than 79 feet or commercial fishing vessel of any size discharging ballast water.
Viper Wire Lubricator Q&A
Should you lubricate wire ropes?
Yes. Proper lubrication will help prevent deterioration of wire rope due to rust and corrosion. Because most wire ropes fail from the inside, it is critical to ensure the center core receives sufficient lubricant and for that you will need a wire lubricator. We highly recommend the Viper Wire Rope Lubricator that is easy to use.
.
How to lubricate wire ropes?
Most wire ropes fail from the inside, so it is important to make sure that the center core receives sufficient lubricantand then its crucial to use a wire lubricator that will be able to press the grease into the core of the wire. A combination approach in which a penetrating lubricant is used to saturate the core, followed with a coating to seal and protect the outer surface, is recommended.
What is the benefits of using a wire lubricator?
- Increases the life of wire ropes by up to 300% compared to manual lubrication
- Reduces relubrication time of ropes from several days to several hours compared to manual lubrication
- Safer work environment
- Environmental benefit with less lubricant used and discarded
